Laško lies at an altitude of 228 m and the river Savinja flows through it. Strolling through the town visitors will discover the beauty of the old town, which dates from ancient times, and is the pride of the local people.
The old town core lies at the foot of the mountain Hum. All modern buildings are arranged in terraced style on the slopes of nearby hills.
Despite the closeness of the buildings the town of Laško is none the less attractive and life goes on in the same way as anywhere else in the world.He who has not seen the town Laško and its surroundings has missed an opportunity to experience something of the beauty, harmony and warmth.
Laško is a beautiful old town with a rich past and rich cultural heritage. The first document mentioning Laško's »borough rights« dates from1227. Laško was granted the status of a town in 1927.
The geographical location and traffic infrastructure along the lower river Savinja as well as the source of healing thermal water essentially influenced the time and intensity Laško's settlement already long before the establishment of a medieval borough.
Under the Roman rule Laško became a well-known spa-resort. The preserved epitaphs and reliefs on Roman tombstones testify of the wealth of their inhabitants.
In the late Middle Ages, Laško was municipal borough and the residence of the far-reaching dominion with its provincial court and the seat of the oldest parish in Slovenia. The Counts of Celje were the lords of Laško for more than a century, followed by the Hapsburgs and the Vetter-Lilijski families.
New fame came to Laško when its thermal springs were rediscovered during the construction of the Vienna – Trieste railway line and in the middle of the last century Laško became a thermal spa resort – holiday place that was known of across Europe.
